My Sites Initiative – CDC

The My Site Initiative seeks to improve business processes, build effective relationships between individuals and groups with common concerns, and drive innovation and discovery.

My Sites will serve the entire spectrum of CDC employees and contractors with intranet access. My Sites seek to complement the current infrastructure such as CDC Neighborhood, PubMed, HiNet, Active Directory, and e-mail.

Projects at CDC succeed when there is good communication, effective teamwork, trust among team members, and access to the necessary information. People have networks of connections which they carry with them from project to project, which they use to fulfill these needs as best they can. However, with a workforce of nearly 15,000 people, CDC needs to use more than traditional social networks, e-mail, and telephones to communicate. CDC needs to establish an online professional network.

Properly designed, My Sites will provide this for CDC by serving as an expertise locator and a medium in which to communicate. Our team saw an opportunity to direct the design and functionality available in the SharePoint My Sites. My Sites will serve the entire spectrum of CDC employees and contractors with intranet access. My Sites seek to complement the current infrastructure such as CDC Neighborhood, PubMed, HiNet, Active Directory, and e-mail.

The team which I am a part of, are the leads in the push to have the forthcoming SharePoint implementation include some functionality which is not available out of the box, as well as some augmentation to the available features. I’ve created several design iterations (including several for a precursor project) and am an advocate for the implementation of the tool.
